Unlike other spectator sports in Australia where betting immediately becomes a crucial part, South Australia Greyhound events that were held in South Australia started out in 1947 as purely recrecreational in nature. This simply meant that the early forms of South Australia Greyhound contests were initially beyond the reach of the average Australian gambler.

However, as the typical South Australia Greyhound races quickly gained popularity among various spectators, it soon became evident that greyhound competitions were also suitable as betting sports. The government of Southern Australia soon got hold of this growing phenomenon such that in 1971, it decided to enact a law whereby betting on greyhound races were made legal. Since then, South Australia Greyhound races, both as a sport and as a betting game, steadily rose to become one of the more successful events in these parts.
